Group to consider transport and highways scheme prioritisation

Press release - 17 October 2007

Shropshire County Council’s economy and environment scrutiny panel are to take a closer look at the current processes in place for prioritising transport and highways schemes.

This follows last month’s (20 July 2007) decision to create a task and finish group to look into these procedures and evaluate how far they go to meeting the needs of local residents.

The group will consider types of schemes such as traffic engineering, public transport and safer routes to school in order to put forward their suggestions on how these schemes should be prioritised, and by whom.

Findings from the group will also contribute towards striking a balance between delivering what people want and what Central Government expects.

Alan Mosley, Chair of economy and environment scrutiny panel, said: “There is a dilemma in that the County Council has been concentrating on getting good scores against established targets but seems to be failing in satisfying the public of Shropshire. We hope that we can identify better ways of prioritising and progressing schemes that put consultation at the forefront.”
