A ceremony in memory of former county councillor David J Lloyd is being held at Gobowen Station today (Friday 16 May at 12.00 noon).
The ceremony will see the unveiling of a sculpture and a memorial scroll commemorating his life and achievements.
David Lloyd served as independent county councillor for Whittington from 1997 until his death in 2006.
He was elected to Oswestry Borough Council in 1995, and was Mayor of the Borough of Oswestry from 2003 to 2004. He also served on Whittington Parish Council.
A tireless advocate and campaigner for improved railway services, David Lloyd was synonymous with the Shrewsbury to Chester railway for more than 20 years. He served on the Chester to Shrewsbury line liaison committee, rail user group and community rail partnership. He was a member of the County Rail Forum and Freight Quality Partnership. He was a member of the Cambrian Railways Trust, and was committed to bringing the Heritage Railway back to Oswestry.
He was also instrumental in reopening the booking office at Gobowen Station.
Brian Gillow, Chairman of Shropshire County Council, who will attend the ceremony, said: “David Lloyd was an extremely committed and enthusiatic councillor and a great servant to Shropshire County Council and to the people of Whittington. I have always respected, in particular, his passionate and dedicated efforts to improve railway services, and this memorial is therefore an excellent and appropriate way to remember him and his work.”
The ceremony has been arranged by the David J Lloyd Memorial Group.
