Shropshire Archives

Shrewsbury Abbey and Abbey Foregate

Welcome to Shropshire Archives - gateway to the history of Shropshire and Telford.

Shropshire Archives holds a wealth of information (old documents and local studies materials) for the historic county of Shropshire which is now Shropshire and the Borough of Telford and Wrekin. We can help you answer all sorts of questions. For example, in the last year we have helped people with the following enquiries:

Family history.

‘Could you tell me if you would have the marriage record for the following -

Charles Bolton [Boulton],cabinetmaker, of St.Oswald, Chester to Elizabeth Critchley, of Moreton Say on 28 October 1816 at Moreton Say?’

Local history.

‘According to the 1851 census one of my ancestors was born in "Shrewsbury Abbey Forget" but I can't find any reference to such a place. Is it familiar to you?’

University research.

‘I would like to begin some research on whatever records I can find as to pubs, taverns and inns in Britain that may lay claim to being among the oldest in the country, or even in Europe – establishments that have continuously served alcohol from the earliest date.’

Time on your hands? Why not attend one of the Friends of Shropshire Archives’ events or a Shropshire Archives' course. Select the news and events link for up to date activities.
