We provide high quality paper copying, microfiching, photographic and digitisation services to customers who require copies from our maps, printed books and manuscripts. We also offer an external service - capturing images from your own collections.

Digital images from original documents at Shropshire Archives

A range of options are available for the digital copying of original documents, the choice depending upon preservation restrictions and the quality required. Copies are available on:

  • CD
  • email (for low resolution files)
  • photo quality paper, either "A4" or "A3" size.

Our price list (which can be downloaded form this page) gives further information. In certain instances conventional photography is required as a first step. If a document requires conservation or repair work before a reproduction can be made an additional charge is made for this service. If digital manipulation is required an extra charge is also made.

If you would like advice, please email us at archives@shropshire.gov.uk

For examples of our reprographics work and an opportunity to purchase prints of town and county maps, please visit our online shop.

Photocopying

Most printed books and maps can be photocopied, subject to copyright restrictions and the condition of the original. The photocopying of original documents is restricted to avoid risk of damage. As a general guide, no document may be photocopied which:

  • is damaged or fragile
  • is bound
  • is larger than A3 size
  • is made of parchment
  • is dated earlier than 1750
  • is an original photograph
  • is a valuable printed work
  • contains a seal
  • contains coloured ink or paint

Please download the preservation guidelines for further details.

Copies from microfilm or microfiche

You can make printouts of material held on microfiche or microfilm or ask staff to do this for you. Please see our price list for further details.

Customers own photography

If you are visiting Shropshire Archives, then you will be able to use your own camera to photograph original documents but only where this does not cause undue risk to the document. There is a charge for a photography permit (day, week, year) and the money helps with the long term preservation of Shropshire's unique collections. If you do want to use your own camera a member of staff must be informed and the copyright declaration signed before the item is photographed. Please select the price list for further information.

Reproduction

Please note, the copying of all material from the collections is subject to UK copyright legislation and preservation guidelines. Please download the preservation guidelines for more information about both these areas.

If you intend to reproduce images from Shropshire Archives in any way (including on the Internet), then you must apply in writing/email to Shropshire Archives. Reproduction charges may apply. Please download the reproduction and publication fees for further details.
